The lawyer of Manny Pacquiao was quoted to have said that the Filipino boxing icon will not fight Floyd Mayweather until after the national elections in the Philippines. Pacquiao is a candidate for congressman in the May 10, 2010 national elections.
Manny Pacquiao’s lawyer Franklin Gacal said the next fight of the popular Filipino boxer will not happen before the May 10 national elections in the Philippines.
The announcement by Gacal though came a day before Bob Arum’s arrival in the Philippines to present a contract for Manny Pacquiao to fight Floyd Mayweather on March 13 next year.
Pacquiao’s lawyer, Franklin Gacal, yesterday told The STAR that the reigning pound-for-pound champion has come to a decision the other night that his next fight will come after the May 10 elections.
“As of last night, Manny said he doesn’t want to fight in April or even May. There will be no fight. Maybe it will come after the elections,” said Gacal.
Gacal explained that Bob Arum is coming to the Philippines for another reason. The trip could have a bearing on the proposal of ABS-CBN Broadcasting Network to air Pacquiao’s next fight in the Philippines and possibly on the Filipino channel.
“Everything will depend on the developments after the elections. But again, as of last night, the March 13 and May 1 dates for Pacquiao’s next fight are out,” said Gacal.
Some boxing fans in the Philippines want Pacquiao to face Mayweather before the pound-for-pound king starts campaigning outside the ring.
Arum is expected to meet Pacquiao any day this week to present to him the contract he prepared for the proposed Pacquiao-Mayweather match which reportedly provided for a March 13 fight schedule.
The proposed Pacquiao-Mayweather match is reported to be next year’s biggest boxing event, featuring two of the greatest boxers on the planet.
