After the fight, I feel satisfied with Penalosa. And it’s not for the beating he took. It is for his being in 2009 an aging fighter testing his skills against the best there is not in his division as most boxers do, not in a division below his as Hopkins, De La Hoya and Mayweather do — but in the division above his – perhaps the deepest division in boxing today. He didn’t go for a soft touch like the fighters mentioned above; he didn’t drop at the first sign of power as Jameel McCline did against Chris Arreola; and he didn’t lose hope that he could win the fight: between rounds, Penalosa insisted Lopez was tiring while his seconds insisted he was through and stopped the fight – which they were right to do.
Penalosa didn’t fold, he didn’t fall – he just brought out the best in himself and the best in his opponent, and for that, this future Hall of Famer is –in a way that other credit worthy fighters like De La Hoya, Hopkins, and Mayweather will never be — a credit to the game.
